Design Details

Obverse: Features a faithful tribute to Victor David Brenner's iconic 1909 portrait of President Abraham Lincoln — captured here in stunning detail thanks to the round's oversized 2 oz format. The right-profile portrait of Lincoln is rendered with extraordinary precision, showcasing every nuance of Brenner's masterful engraving — from the texture of Lincoln's hair and beard to the dignified set of his shoulders. The inscriptions "IN GOD WE TRUST" arch across the top, "LIBERTY" appears to the left of Lincoln's portrait, and the date "1909" with the "S" mint mark beneath it appear to the right — faithfully recreating the historic San Francisco Mint issue that has become one of the most iconic coin designs in American history.

Reverse: Showcases Golden State Mint's signature bullion design, featuring two stylized wheat stalks that frame the central inscriptions — a deliberate nod to the original Wheat Cent reverse that gave the series its name. The text "GOLDEN STATE MINT" arches across the top, with "TWO TROY OZ" prominently displayed in the upper center and ".999 FINE SILVER" anchoring the lower portion. The initials "V.D.B." appear at the bottom — honoring Victor David Brenner, whose original inclusion of those same initials on the 1909 Lincoln Cent sparked one of the most famous coin controversies in U.S. Mint history.

Historical Significance — The 1909-S VDB Lincoln Cent

The original 1909-S VDB Lincoln Wheat Cent is one of the most legendary coins in American numismatic history. Released to commemorate the 100th anniversary of Abraham Lincoln's birth, it marked several historic firsts:

The first U.S. coin to feature a real historical figure (rather than allegorical figures like Liberty or eagles)
The first U.S. coin to feature an American president
Victor David Brenner's design — selected personally by President Theodore Roosevelt
Replaced the long-running Indian Head Cent that had been in production since 1859

The VDB Controversy: Brenner originally included his full initials "VDB" at the bottom of the reverse, between the wheat stalks. Public outcry over the perceived size and prominence of the initials forced the U.S. Mint to remove them just days after release — making the original 1909-VDB and 1909-S VDB cents extraordinarily rare. The San Francisco Mint produced only 484,000 1909-S VDB cents before the initials were removed — making the 1909-S VDB the scarcest regular-issue Lincoln Cent ever produced. Original 1909-S VDB cents in collectible condition routinely sell for thousands of dollars, and in mint state condition can command tens of thousands.

The Lincoln Wheat Cent Legacy: The Lincoln Wheat Cent design — with wheat stalks framing the reverse — remained in production from 1909 through 1958, making it one of the longest-running coin designs in U.S. history. Even after the wheat reverse was replaced by the Lincoln Memorial in 1959, Brenner's Lincoln obverse continued in use — and remains on the modern Lincoln Cent today, making it the longest-running obverse design in U.S. coinage history at over 115 years and counting.

Why This Tribute Round?

Because original 1909-S VDB cents are prohibitively expensive for most collectors, tribute silver rounds like this 2 oz GSM piece offer the perfect alternative — allowing collectors and stackers to own the iconic design at a fraction of the cost while gaining 2 troy ounces of investment-grade silver at the same time. The oversized format also displays Brenner's design with a level of detail and brilliance impossible to appreciate on the original tiny 19mm copper cent — making this round both historically meaningful and visually stunning.

Lower Premiums — Tribute rounds typically carry lower premiums than government-minted bullion coins

Stackable Format — Round shape and standard sizing make them ideal for portfolio building

Why Stack Silver?

Silver continues to play a vital role in the modern precious metals portfolio. As both an industrial metal (with growing demand from solar, electronics, and EV manufacturing) and a traditional safe-haven store of value, silver offers unique upside potential alongside the wealth-preservation qualities that have defined precious metals for millennia. Larger-format rounds like this 2 oz piece typically carry lower premiums per ounce compared to fractional silver coins — making them highly efficient for stackers building meaningful silver weight over time.

Investment Value

The Golden State Mint 2 oz Wheat Cent Silver Round represents an excellent way to add investment-grade silver to a precious metals portfolio while owning a piece that pays tribute to one of the most iconic designs in American numismatic history. With its substantial 2-ounce weight, .999 fine silver content, and historically meaningful design, it bridges the gap between traditional bullion and collector-grade silver art. As a hedge against inflation, currency devaluation, and economic uncertainty, silver remains one of the most accessible precious metals — and this round delivers that value in a uniquely American format.
