Carved from a massive block of basalt stone in the early 16th century, the Aztec sun stone is an impressive design that showcases the calendar of the ancient Aztec Empire and the Mexica culture. The actual stone itself that this design is based on is 141 inches across, 39 inches thick, and weighs an astonishing 54,210 lbs.
The design on the opposite side of these bars is also inspired by real life. Cuauhtemoc was the final emperor of the Aztec Empire and ruler of the city of Tenochtitlan. He was captured by the Spanish conquistadors sacking the city in August 1521 and eventually executed four years later by Spaniards under the leadership of Hernan Cortes.
