The original Silver Eagle design, produced in 1986, was not the first time it was utilized in circulation. Weinman's Walking Liberty artwork was developed when American coinage charm was average. The new design was a rapid hit with the everyday individual as a reminder of American values and patriotism. The American Eagle coin's obverse artwork is Adolph A. Weinman's full-length figure of Liberty in full stride, wrapped in flag folds, with her right hand stretched out and branches of laurel and oak in her left.

In 2021, a new reverse design was announced - bringing attention to the series because it was the first redesign ever. U.S. Mint AIP Designer Emily Damstra created the new design for the 35th anniversary year, which was then sculpted by Mint Medallic Artist Michael Gaudioso. The latest Silver Eagle design displays a single eagle coming in for a landing, carrying an oak branch as if to add it to a nest. The design is also featured on the 2023 Silver Eagles to add to the celebrated American Eagle legacy.
