The 5 Nevada Goldback is more than just a gold note—it is a tribute to knowledge, progress, and Nevada’s pioneering spirit. Featuring a detailed, symbolic design crafted in 24-karat gold, this Goldback is a valuable addition for collectors, investors, and history enthusiasts alike.
Sophia embodies divine inspiration, progress, and knowledge, surrounded by symbols of Nevada’s rich history, innovations, and educational institutions. The design features libraries and university buildings from the University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV) and the University of Nevada, Reno (UNR), along with historic elements such as a quartz mill from the State Seal, an antique Hoover Dam hard helmet, and various books and scrolls. Other notable symbols include a wagon wheel, a silver mine car, a pen and ink, and books by Samuel Clemens (Mark Twain), a renowned figure in Nevada’s literary history. The No. 40 Locomotive, a vital part of the state’s transportation history, is also present. A particularly meaningful detail is an open scroll displaying words from the 15th Amendment, highlighting Nevada’s historic role as the first state to adopt the amendment, ensuring equal voting rights regardless of skin color.
Sophia is depicted in battle gear, wearing a raised helm, arm guards, and breastplate, while holding her shield and spear, symbolizing both strength and wisdom. A Wisdom’s owl is prominently featured on the gorget around her neck, reinforcing her connection to Athena. She also holds a pickaxe, a tribute to Nevada’s deep mining heritage, which played a crucial role in the state’s development. Like all Nevada Goldback designs, this one features a pillar, upon which Sophia stands atop an open book, reinforcing the motto of the Great Seal of Nevada: “All for Our Country.” Additionally, Nevada’s Mountain Bluebird and the White Pine tree are included, representing the state’s natural beauty and the White Pine County region in central-eastern Nevada.
