Product Description:

MetalStacks proudly presents this Repubblica Italiana 500 Lire "Mercurio" Biglietto di Stato a Corso Legale — a beautifully designed Italian state note issued under decree authority D.P.R. 5-6-1978 e D.M. 20-12-1978, bearing series designation U 22 and serial number 595714. Engraved by E. Vangelli and printed by IPS Officina Carte Valori — the official Italian state security printing office — this note represents the finest tradition of Italian intaglio engraving applied to everyday currency.

(PSV 20)

The obverse features an allegorical figure at left alongside the denomination — specifically a classically rendered profile portrait of Mercurio (Mercury), the Roman deity of commerce, travelers, and communication, depicted in the ancient style with his characteristic winged headdress. The design is a testament to Italy's deep artistic heritage, drawing on classical antiquity to adorn even its circulating paper money. The reverse showcases the denomination "CINQUECENTO LIRE" in bold typography surrounded by intricate guilloche security patterns, with the Italian state emblem and a radiant sunburst design rendered in teal and copper tones.

This note belongs to the final chapter of the Italian Lira era — the 500 Lire note was one of the most iconic denominations in Italian everyday life for decades, eventually replaced entirely when Italy adopted the Euro in 2002. Notes like this one, now completely out of circulation, serve as tangible reminders of pre-Euro Italian monetary identity and the country's long tradition of producing some of the world's most artistically distinguished currency.

A Note on Condition

This note is offered in circulated condition and displays honest wear consistent with its age. Condition is fully and accurately reflected in the photographs provided, and as always at MetalStacks, what you see is exactly what you receive.

Presentation

This note is securely housed in a protective rigid currency holder and elegantly mounted within a wood display frame with a black matted background, ready for immediate display on a desk, shelf, mantel, or wall. The note's vivid teal and gold color palette contrasts beautifully against the black matting, making it as visually striking as it is historically significant. As with all MetalStacks offerings, the note has been carefully handled and verified for authenticity.

Because only one example is available, the exact note shown — including its distinct serial number and individual condition — is the note you will receive.
