Goldbacks have arrived in the American Southwest with the launch of the Arizona Goldback Series, a collection celebrating the state’s layered and diverse history. Drawing from the eras of Spanish exploration, Mexican independence, and Arizona’s eventual U.S. statehood, this series showcases rich cultural influences that shaped the region’s identity through detailed artwork and fine gold craftsmanship.
The 1 Arizona Goldback Gold Note honors the early 19th-century era following Mexico’s independence from Spain in 1821. Struck with 1/1000 Troy oz of .9999 fine gold, it features precise engraving and advanced vacuum-deposition technology, combining artistry with the enduring value of physical gold.

Design & Symbolism
The obverse design of the 1 Arizona Goldback depicts a woman in traditional Mexican dress, representing the early 19th-century period of Mexican sovereignty in the region. Behind her stands the historic Mission San José de Tumacácori, founded in 1691 by Father Eusebio Kino in the Santa Cruz River Valley.
One of the oldest European settlements in Arizona, the mission served as a cornerstone of Spanish and later Mexican influence in the region. Its distinctive dome and adobe architecture symbolize endurance through centuries of change — from missionary expansion and frontier settlement to the turbulence of post-independence Mexico.
Following Mexico’s separation from Spain in 1821, the nearby Presidio of Tubac became an important northern outpost of the Mexican state of Sonora, serving as both a military garrison and civilian settlement. Despite challenges from Apache conflicts and political instability, the people of this frontier era demonstrated resilience, adapting to a landscape marked by both opportunity and adversity.
