Design & Symbolism
The obverse of the 2 Arizona Goldback Gold Note portrays the allegorical figure of Exploration guiding a wooden boat through the Colorado River within the Grand Canyon, symbolizing discovery, courage, and human curiosity. In the distance, Major John Wesley Powell, leader of the 1869 expedition, can be seen navigating his own vessel amid the canyon’s towering cliffs.
In May 1869, Powell and nine companions embarked on a three-month journey down the uncharted Colorado River, facing capsized boats, lost provisions, and near starvation. Despite hardship and tragedy, the expedition succeeded, marking the first recorded navigation of the Grand Canyon and changing America’s understanding of its vast western frontier.
A Civil War veteran who lost his right arm at the Battle of Shiloh, Powell went on to become one of the 19th century’s most influential explorers, geologists, and ethnologists. His leadership, intellect, and vision epitomize the perseverance and bravery celebrated in this design.
