The obverse of the 25 Arizona Goldback Gold Note depicts Tenacity, the allegorical figure representing courage and endurance, exploring the Lost Dutchman Mine deep within the Superstition Mountains—a landscape as awe-inspiring as it is enigmatic.
Rising from the desert east of Phoenix, the Superstition Mountains are shrouded in centuries of legend. To the Apache, these rugged volcanic peaks were sacred ground, inhabited by spirits and thunder gods. Later, Spanish explorers and American prospectors viewed them as the key to unimaginable riches, their canyons rumored to conceal veins of untold gold.
According to legend, the Lost Dutchman Mine was discovered in the 1870s by Jacob Waltz, a German immigrant mistakenly called “the Dutchman.” Before his death in 1891, Waltz hinted at its location through cryptic clues, sparking more than a century of searches by hopeful adventurers and treasure seekers. Many perished in their attempts, yet the myth endures—symbolizing human determination and the relentless pursuit of discovery.
In this design, Tenacity embodies that spirit—her lamp guiding the way through darkness, representing perseverance in the face of uncertainty and the courage to seek light within mystery.
