Design & Symbolism
The obverse of the 5 Arizona Goldback Gold Note captures the female allegory of Justice in the dusty streets of Tombstone, moments after the Gunfight at the O.K. Corral. Smoke rises from the barrel of her revolver as she stands poised and unflinching—a symbol of courage and the pursuit of law in a land marked by chaos.
Founded in 1877 after prospector Ed Schieffelin discovered silver in the arid desert of southeastern Arizona, Tombstone quickly became one of the most notorious boomtowns of the Old West. By the early 1880s, it boasted over 10,000 residents, more than 100 saloons, and a reputation as a “Town Too Tough to Die.” Violence and vice thrived alongside opportunity, culminating in one of history’s most famous shootouts.
On October 26, 1881, a brief yet explosive 30-second gunfight broke out near the O.K. Corral, pitting lawmen Wyatt, Virgil, and Morgan Earp, along with Doc Holliday, against the Clanton and McLaury brothers. This confrontation cemented Tombstone’s place in legend, representing both the lawless spirit and the quest for order that defined the American frontier.
In the 5 Arizona Goldback, Justice stands as both protector and witness to this defining moment—an embodiment of integrity, resilience, and balance amid the chaos of the West.
