The Arizona Goldback Series brings Goldbacks to the American Southwest for the first time, celebrating the region’s cultural depth and historical significance. Each denomination in this collection highlights a defining era of Arizona’s past, from Spanish colonial exploration and Mexican independence to its eventual statehood within the United States.

The 50 Arizona Goldback stands out as one of the most visually striking designs in the series, honoring the spirit of discovery and scientific pursuit. Struck with 1/20 Troy oz of .9999 fine gold, this note commemorates the history of astronomy in Arizona through its depiction of Curiosity, the allegorical figure of intellectual wonder and exploration.

Design & Symbolism

The obverse of the 50 Arizona Goldback Gold Note showcases the allegory Curiosity, portrayed as a female figure immersed in scientific study beneath the night sky at Lowell Observatory. Her gaze and instruments are directed toward the heavens, symbolizing humanity’s timeless pursuit of knowledge and the mysteries of the cosmos.

Lowell Observatory, founded in 1894 by Percival Lowell, sits high on a forested mesa overlooking Flagstaff, Arizona. Established to study Mars and the broader solar system, the observatory became a hub for planetary research and discovery. Although Lowell’s own theories about Martian canals were later disproven, his vision laid the foundation for groundbreaking work in modern astronomy.

On February 18, 1930, Clyde Tombaugh, a 23-year-old astronomer working at Lowell Observatory, made history when he discovered Pluto, the ninth planet in our solar system at the time. This discovery—announced on March 13, 1930, what would have been Lowell’s 75th birthday—cemented the observatory’s place in scientific history. The planet’s name, suggested by 11-year-old Venetia Burney of England, added another layer of wonder to this remarkable achievement.

In the design, Curiosity’s posture and instruments evoke both the pioneering mindset of early astronomers and the enduring quest for knowledge that drives humanity to explore the unknown.

Additional Details

Each 50 Arizona Goldback Gold Note is presented in new, mint-fresh condition and sealed in a protective currency sleeve. Containing 1/20 Troy ounce of .9999 fine gold, it remains fully interchangeable with all other Goldbacks while offering a higher intrinsic gold content and enhanced visual intricacy.

Before the release of the 100 Goldback denomination in 2025, the 50 Goldback was the largest denomination across all Goldback series, representing the pinnacle of artistry, craftsmanship, and collectible appeal within the program.
