The 1 South Dakota Goldback Gold Note is the latest addition to the growing Goldback series—an innovative way to use gold as a spendable form of currency. Containing 1/1000th Troy oz of 24-karat gold, each note is precision-layered in a durable polymer, making it a flexible and functional piece of real gold. Though not legal tender, Goldbacks are a voluntary currency accepted by participating vendors across multiple states.

Key Features:

  • Contains 1/1000th Troy oz of 24K gold

  • 5th official state series in the Goldback collection

  • Features Pax (Peace), a Lakota Native American woman in traditional regalia

  • Reverse side features a mirrored image of the obverse

  • Available individually in a protective currency sleeve or in 100-note bundles

  • Not U.S. legal tender, but spendable where voluntarily accepted

Symbolism & Design:

The obverse of the 1 South Dakota Goldback features Pax, the Roman goddess of peace, reimagined as a Lakota woman performing a traditional hoop dance. Dressed in her handmade regalia, she represents the strength, harmony, and cultural heritage of the Lakota people. Her presence is surrounded by local wildlife, the sacred Bear Butte formation, and meaningful tribal symbolism.

The design pays homage to the Lakota, Dakota, and Nakota people—whose name means “The Friendly Ones”—and reflects a broader message of unity, respect, and peace. The phrase “Seek Peace” is inscribed at Pax’s feet, inviting each holder of this note to live with intention and harmony.

In the background, sacred elements like land, air, water, rocks, fire, plants, and animals echo the interconnectedness of life. The Pasque flower, South Dakota’s state flower, blooms in the corner, symbolizing the fleeting yet beautiful cycle of life.

Due to the note’s thin composition, the reverse displays a mirrored image of the obverse to preserve its integrity.
